Copyright & Takedown Policy

This policy describes how ScoreSynth, operated by SiteSynth (Belgium), handles copyright notices and counter-notices, both for scores uploaded by users and for the public sheet-music library. It follows the notice-and-action rules of the EU Digital Services Act and also accepts notices in the DMCA format. To report infringing content, contact us at copyright@scoresynth.com.
1. Our Commitment to Copyright
SiteSynth respects intellectual property rights and expects users of ScoreSynth to do the same. ScoreSynth contains two kinds of sheet music. Scores uploaded by users, which we host as a technical platform and do not review before they go live. And a library of scores imported from public sheet-music collections, described in the next section. We act on valid copyright notices for both, and we never charge for or sell the scores in the library. If you believe that content on ScoreSynth infringes your copyright, or the copyright of someone you are authorised to represent, tell us using the steps below and we will deal with it promptly.
2. The Public Sheet-Music Library
Most scores on ScoreSynth come from public collections of sheet music, such as the Petrucci Music Library (IMSLP), where works are published because the composer's copyright has expired or because the person who typeset the edition released it under a free licence. Copyright terms differ from country to country. We assess the library under EU and Belgian law, where a work is generally protected for 70 years after the author's death. A particular edition, arrangement or typesetting can also be protected on its own, even when the underlying music is free. With more than 120,000 scores we cannot verify every file individually, so we rely on rights holders to tell us when something should not be there. If you hold rights in a work, edition or arrangement that appears in the library, send us a notice as described below. We will remove the score and make sure it is not imported again.
3. How to Report an Infringement
There are two ways to reach us: — On any score page, open the "Report" option and choose "Copyright infringement". — Email copyright@scoresynth.com with the subject line "Copyright Notice". Please include: 1. The work you hold rights in: title, composer and, if your claim concerns a specific edition or arrangement, the publisher or editor. 2. Where it is on ScoreSynth: the web address (URL) of each score page you want removed. 3. Who you are: your name, email address and, if you act for someone else, whom you represent. 4. A statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the rights holder or the law, and that the information in your notice is accurate. 5. Your signature. A typed full name is sufficient. If something is missing we will ask you for it rather than ignore the notice. Knowingly submitting a false notice may expose you to legal liability.
4. What We Do With a Notice
We review every notice we receive. If the notice is complete and the claim is plausible, we disable access to the score on the website and in the mobile app. We aim to do this within three business days of receiving a complete notice, and usually sooner. For a user upload, we notify the user who uploaded the score, give them a copy of the notice with your personal contact details removed, and inform them of their right to submit a counter-notice. For a score from the public library, we remove it and record it so that it is not imported again. In either case we tell you what we did. If we decide not to act on a notice, we explain why.
5. Counter-Notice Process
If you are the user whose upload was removed and you believe the removal was the result of a mistake or misidentification, you may submit a counter-notice. To submit a counter-notice, send a written communication to copyright@scoresynth.com containing all of the following: 1. Identification of the removed material — A description of the material that was removed and the location where it appeared before removal (e.g., the URL). 2. Statement of good faith — A statement that you have a good faith belief that the material was removed as a result of a mistake or misidentification. 3. Consent to jurisdiction — A statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the courts of Belgium (or, if you live in another EU member state, the courts of that state), and that you will accept service of process from the person who submitted the original notice. 4. Your contact information — Your full legal name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address. 5. Signature — Your physical or electronic signature. Upon receipt of a valid counter-notice, SiteSynth will forward a copy to the original complainant. If the complainant does not notify us within ten (10) business days that they have filed a court action seeking an order restraining the re-posting of the material, we may restore the removed content at our discretion.
6. Repeat Infringer Policy
In accordance with applicable law and SiteSynth's commitment to copyright protection, SiteSynth has adopted a policy of terminating, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who are determined to be repeat infringers. A "repeat infringer" is a user who has had content removed from the Platform on two or more separate occasions in response to valid copyright notices. SiteSynth may, in its sole discretion, permanently suspend or terminate the account of any repeat infringer, and may take additional measures including blocking access to the Platform. SiteSynth also reserves the right to terminate the account of any user who, in its reasonable judgment, has uploaded clearly infringing content, even if only a single incident has occurred.
7. Abuse of This Process
Misuse of the notice process — including submitting notices that knowingly misrepresent that material is infringing — is prohibited and may result in legal liability. Similarly, submitting a counter-notice that contains false information may expose you to legal consequences. If you are unsure whether content you wish to report constitutes copyright infringement, we recommend consulting a qualified legal professional before submitting a notice.
